RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Ph.D. Dissertation Research
Microfinance and Rotating Savings and Credit Associations in West Kalimantan, Indonesia
I will carry out extended fieldwork in West Kalimantan, Indonesia in which I will examine the impact of microfinance institutions (MFIs) on the flow of capital within communities and resultant changes in work and enterprise. Additionally, in this research I will investigate social and economic changes associated with the transition from local, traditional means of generating capital, such as rotating savings and credit associations, arisan and kongsi, to new microfinance opportunities in which funds are obtained from outside the community.

M.A. Thesis Research

Is Iban Hunting a Costly Signal? An Evaluation of the Scale and Context of Costly Signal Production.
In my thesis research, I examined the validity of CST in the explanation of hunting practices among the Iban, and the appropriateness of evaluating signaling behaviors across the longhouse community rather than as individual-specific communications. This research emphasized parallels between CST and previous explanations for "wasteful" behaviors, such as kin selection, indirect reciprocity, conspicuous consumption, and symbolic capital.
